Clams for Sale
There is nothing quite like visiting a market in a foreign country. They ooze with “foreign” feelings, sights, sounds, and smells. The photo above was taken at a market in Valparaiso, Chile, one of my favourites yet. If you’re hoping to get great photos of a market my recommendation is to go nice and early so that you capture people and the stalls before the chaos rings in. Also, you are more likely at that time of morning to find that people are more approachable. Also, if you have inhibitions about photographing people simply chat with them for a bit and then ask them if you can take some pictures. Then, let them go back about their business and capture them doing regular daily work. You’ll find that those shots are much more candid.

Barrio Ingles
La Serena, Chile is known as Central Chile’s premier beach town. But it hasn’t always just been a simple beach resort spot situated on the cold Humboldt current. The adjoining town of Coquimbo was also once host to a heavy naval base, which included the home to many British Sailors during the famous England/Argentine war over the Falkland Islands. Today, the barrio ingles district of Coquimbo is one of the more interesting spots in the area. It is full of interesting structures and statues as well as some of the best bars, and nightlife in general, in La Serena. Although it might not be hyped too much by your travel guide it is well worth stopping in for a look.

There’s something about Arica, Chile that keeps people yearning to come back. The city itself isn’t all to pleasing, and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t at least a little bit rough around the edges. It has a number of beaches, but none of them will blow you away with their tranquility, crystal clear waters or white sand beaches. However, there is something that always draws people back to this little town just south of the Peruvian border.
Beyond being the surf mecca of Chile, and believe me the waves are great, what really draws people back here are the friendly nature of the people who are always more than willing to lend a hand if you need it or point you in the right direction if your lost. Perhaps it’s a small town thing here in Arica, something that’s generally hard to come by in urban Chile.
