Colonia de Sacramento is one of my favourite places in all of Uruguay, and it’s images like the one above that really make it for me. The city is filled with old, colonial photos just waiting to be taken. The streets are lined with old cars, the houses ooze in the colonial vibe, and there seems to be something worth a photoraph on nearly every inch of the town.

To get to Colonia, you can hope the boat from Buenos Aires, Argentina and simply make a day trip out of it. You can catch the bus from Montevideo, Uruguay and spend the night in town. Or, you are always more than welcome to stay in Colonia for couple relaxing days and enjoy the vibe.

Sandwiched between the two superpowers of Brazil and Argentina, tiny Uruguay often gets overlooked by trip planners. However, those who skip the chance to spend some time exploring the coast of Uruguay are missing out greatly. From the capital of Montevideo, which sits just across the river from Argentina, to the border of Brazil there are a number of beaches worth plopping down on for some relaxation. The city of Punta del Este is perhaps the most famous beach town in the region and for good reason. It has calm, warm waters, soft sand, and a swarm of beautiful people who strut their stuff on the shores. The coast of Uruguay is a place of beauty that should not be skipped.

In most of South America the changing of the guard happens at noon, but Uruguay has always been a little bit different. Instead of the classic changing of the guard ceremony the flag removal at the end of the day is the big spectacle in Montevideo. Just like the changing of the guard in other countries, the taking down of the Uruguayan flag is a bit of a spectator’s sport. One can hardly justify taking down a flag without first having a band, marching soldiers and a ceremony can they? This event takes place in the old square of Montevideo every day at sunset. Be sure to pack your camera because you are sure to get some good shots.
