Although the Chileans like to tell people that they have the world’s highest geyser, the truth is that the highest is actually just across the border, and up the hill, in Bolivia. Some make the argument that the Bolivian geysers are no more than bubbling waters and not true geysers, but anyone who has spent time around them when they are active know that they are more than just mud pots.
The geo-thermal area that you see in the photo above is from a thermal area in the Bolivian altiplano. Getting to these geysers and mud pools is more than a simple hop. The fields sit at over 5000 meters above sea-level and will have even the most athletic people gasping for air. The Bolivian Altiplano is one of the most impressive landscapes on the planet. It is ripe with desolation but yet still seems to manage a way to burst with life. These geysers, mud pools, or whatever you want to call them are a part of that diverse and impressive landscape.
